A.

Q.

Will my unit work in a garage?

A.

GPS must ‘see’ the sky to perform properly. If the unit is in a garage and unable to see the sky when pinged for location it will respond with a red ? where the Stop and Start indicator appear. This means the GPS cannot see the sky but it will report the last location where it saw the sky. Since the internal GPS in the unit is updating every second, often the reported location will be very close to the actual location.

Q.

Sometimes my current GPS unit will give a false report. Will this unit give false reports?

A.

On-Board has incorporated many safeguards to prohibit a false report. However, GPS is wireless and as everyone knows wireless is unpredictable. Recently a customer complained about a unit making multiple trips even though it was actually sitting at an airport in a parking lot. Upon investigation, it was found the vehicle was sitting under a large billboard with a revolving sign that changed every few minutes. The reflection of the GPS on the billboard and the movement of the sign created the perfect situation for false reports. This is an extremely rare occurrence but it is important to make owners aware of this situation.
